About me

I am an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist and I use a variety of approaches, based on many years training and experience of different types of therapy. I integrate mindfulness techniques with more traditional talking therapies as I believe this taps into our inner wisdom – to find resources that we may not be aware of, to manage our emotions, to heal ourselves and generally to create more satisfying and fulfilling lives.

I was a lawyer and manager for many years before training to be a therapist and I bring to my work an awareness of the challenges associated with a corporate environment and my own experience of counselling and psychotherapy, which I have found to be supportive and ultimately healing.

Trauma

I have a particular interest in working with people who have experienced trauma, resulting either from a single overwhelming incident or situation or as a result of childhood abuse or neglect of some sort. Symptoms experienced might include anxiety, overwhelming emotions, panic attacks, flashbacks and intrusive thoughts, numbness, hyper-vigilance and unexplained physical illness which often seriously undermine a person’s ability to enjoy and live life to the full.

In the last 20 years, developments in neuroscience have given a far greater understanding of the psychological and physiological processes involved and newer ways of working have developed that more directly impact the bodily and emotional legacy of trauma. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy addresses the effects of trauma on the nervous system and body without the need to use touch. Mindfulness techniques help to resolve trauma-related body responses before processing emotional responses and meaning-making.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

I completed the Oxford Cambridge and RSA certificate in Counselling Skills in 2005 and am a graduate of Spectrum’s Psychotherapy training programme. Training courses I’ve competed at Spectrum include their Post- Graduate training in Psychotherapy, Anger Management, Working with Sexuality, Childhood Sexual Abuse andTransforming Relationships.

Spectrum is a centre for humanistic training and is a registered organisation of the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy (UKCP). I am an accredited Spectrum psychotherapist and am registered with the UKCP. I am also a member of and registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

I have also completed the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute’s training for the treatment of Trauma,  their Advanced training for more complex issues and their training for Developmental Trauma (due to complete in mid-June 2015). Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a cutting-edge, mindfulness-based psychotherapy for trauma, based on the latest research and neuroscience.

I worked for five years, ending in 2012, at Hammersmith & Fulham MIND as a volunteer counsellor and then as an assessor. I’ve had a private practice since 2009.

I am also a CEDR (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution) Accredited Mediator.

Fees

My normal fee for the initial session and for weekly 50 minute sessions is £65 at Thrive@SW6 and £75 at Sloane Square.

Further Information

I offer short-term and longer-term therapy. The first step is to have an initial session, during or after which we will decide whether to work together. (You may want to go away and think about this before making a decision).

If you would like an informal chat about how therapy might be able to help you and how we might work together, please contact me on 07905 514593.
